BROWNFIELD — CULTURE
The management of the village of Strání decided to buy and repair unused building of the former cultural house and thus restore the natural cultural center of the village. Strání lies in the foothills of the White Carpathians and local life is strongly influenced by the surrounding nature, but also by traditions and folklore. New constructions usually has a number of negative impacts, such as high consumption of materials (cement, sand, steel), greenhouse gas emissions or the use of structures that cannot be recycled which generates construction waste at the end of the life cycle.
Therefore, the aim of the design was to preserve the existing building as much as possible and to create the necessary facilities for performers and more than 200 spectators of major cultural events, such as village carnivals, concerts and folklore celebrations.

ARCHITECTURE
The building of the former culture house burned down in the past and underwent a very insensitive reconstruction. Therefore, we proposed removing poor quality additional structure and damaged parts of the building. The designed exterior of the building is very simple and the basis is a new roof with a sheet metal covering of bronze color and blue-gray plaster. We also restored all the original windows with a new square grid and triple glazing.
A new glazed entrance hall will be built between the restored building and the adjoining house, which will improve access to all floors of both houses. In the interior, we have restored the original materials, such as terrazzo, oak friezes or wooden acoustic paneling.
SUSTAINABILITY
For the reconstruction, we carefully selected quality and sustainable materials with a low carbon footprint. We assessed all elements using the LCA analysis and as a result we managed to reduce the carbon footprint by 20 tons CO2eq. compared to normal construction.
The connection to the surrounding park and greenery was also important. Rainwater from the building is drained into the storage tank and will be used for watering the surrounding greenery.
We designed a green roof on part of the building, which prevents overheating and works naturally with rainwater.
