ARCHITECTURE
The engine room building will offer an audiovisual exhibition in the newly renovated underground floor, which will present the history of the Gabriela mine and the perished Karviná town. The original hall will be repaired on the ground floor, in which a new auditorium for 110 spectators is planned. In the mining towers, there will be an activity center for children and expo spaces for smaller exhibitions. On the steel struts of the towers, an ascent to the lookout point is being considered. The area will be complemented by a new tourist information center (TIC) building with spaces for workshops or a bistro with an outdoor terrace. Relaxation and park areas, new greenery and a bathing biotope with a sandy beach are designed around the buildings.
SUSTAINABILITY
The ambition of the project was to introduce emission-free possibilities for the construction and operation of new buildings in the former coal-mining region. That is why the concept of the new TIC was created, which is designed in the spirit of circular architecture as a carbon-neutral and energy-plus building. Existing buildings are equipped with adaptation measures (ventilation, reflective materials, new glazing, green roofs, etc.) that will improve thermal comfort in the summer months. Rainwater is accumulated from the roofs of all buildings into underground reservoirs or, for example, a bathing biotope. The area's greenery is complemented by new plantings which is more resistant to the effects of climate change.
